About The Conference Center & Retreat
Our history is a story of evolving creative and business endeavor. We have been providing service to a variety of companies, groups and organizations as a unique place for learning, training and retreats since 1988. From its beginning, The Essex Conference Center has operated with an environmental commitment and continues to add procedures to reduce it's footprint on the environment.
The original building was built in 1968 by the present owner Stephan Gersh, a nationally recognized fine art landscape photographer. His photographs grace the interior of the main building.
In 1975 the building underwent major renovations to become a school for visual communication continuing into the late '80s. During this period, there were frequent requests for meeting space by various organizations.
His wife Judy Arisman, a graphic designer, has worked with major publishers for twenty-five years. Judy is the principal in Arisman Design Studio providing a wide range graphic design services to many businesses and individuals. Together they began the process of transforming the property into a unique conference facility.
Once again major renovation took place. Meeting spaces, bedrooms, spa facilities, and dining facilities were constructed. Judy began the extensive gardens and landscaping that surround the Center. The pond and waterfall were created. A seventeen elements ropes course was installed.
With a basis in a strong environmental commitment, the Center has undergone constant refinement and improvements to serve as an off-site meeting location for many organizations. Judy continues to be responsible for the gardens, visual collaterals and assists in the overall development of the facility.
Starting five years ago, Stephan began working with metal. The grounds and the inside of the main building are graced with many fine sculptures he has produced. Several commissions are in process. You are welcome to visit him when he is working in his studio, located on the Center's property.
